I just saw a video on the various brands of spectacles/sunglasses and I always wondered on why this is the case. Until I saw this Youtube video that a few friends were sharing via Facebook, I finally found out why.
Here is the video that explains everything:
You might think that prices might keep falling because there's so many brands and so much competition. In fact, it is all under one brand - one company.
The Italian owner is sure a smart one, and thanks to Luxottica we are all paying premium prices for things that cost less than a $100.
Would you still get branded eyewear knowing its all under one company now? Let me know what you think.
For myself, I just got a new pair of spectacles recently when I broke my past pair - the one that stayed with me for over the past few years. Not the branded ones under Luxottica of course.
I went to Owndays at Raffles City, and found a pair that I really liked and it cost $198. My degree is pretty low but I have high astigmatism but I'm glad they got it done within the hour. The spectacles feel really comfortable and that's a key factor as it will be on my face for at least half a day.
If you always spend long hours like me on the PC and phone, I recommend paying about $100 on the spot to get the PC version done. It is hard to get used to at first but it really is helpful to your eyes. Another way is to always use apps that help with saving your eyesight, which I will touch on below.
The app is called f.lux and it can be found here. It is available for free for both Mac and Windows OS - oh and the iPhone/iPad as well but only for jailbroken ones. I do not encourage jailbreaking as it breaks the stability of your devices.
For Android devices, you can use an app called Twilight. I'm using the pro version here but the free one is good enough. It auto detects the sunset area in your area as well, similar to f.lux
Here's some screenshots and do not be surprised if you see my screen being reddish - not its not damaged.
