It's been over two years since the original Chromecast made its debut with 20 million devices sold already. Google has now improved upon that and the new Chromecast is more of a dongle than a stick now - with a round puck-like body and a short flexible cable hanging off of it for the HDMI connection. It gives the Chromecast more flexibility in placement, which is a good thing, but the real improvements of 802.11ac Wifi, 5GHz Wifi and intelligent antennas should have real performance impacts.
Google also introduced Chromecast Audio is a small device that plugs into your existing speakers, so you can stream your favorite music, radio and podcasts over Wi-Fi, similar to Chromecast. It works with tons of apps, including Spotify, Pandora and Google Play Music. It works from anywhere in your home with your favorite devices, including Android, iOS, and laptops just like the first Chromecast.
It is available for 65USD and 35USD in the Google Play Store respectively for the Chromecast and the Chromecast Audio, but for those of us who are not allowed to buy it from there will have to go through alternative sources like Amazon. I really hope to see Google products put more emphasis in Singapore.
Now to the best part, the new Nexus phones:
The Huawei Nexus 6P is the higher-end of the new Nexus family, with an all-metal body, big 5.7-inch display and top-notch internal specs. It's a big phone for sure but it comes with the performance of a current flagship phone at just 499USD. A rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, 12.3MP camera with larger 1.55-micron pixels, QHD display and 3450 mAh battery are the headline hardware features here. Definitely a must have for the avid photographer!
The smaller sibling, the LG Nexus 5X carries on the Nexus 5's legacy. The 5.2-inch 1080p phone is made out of plastic instead of metal, a fingerprint sensor, similar camera specs and of course USB-C.It comes in both 16GB and 32GB, priced at 379USD for the 16GB model.
Both phones are available for pre-order already from the Google Store, and you get a 50USD play credit for the pre-order of any new Nexus phone!
Meanwhile, do check out the video by MKBHD if you are still unsure on which to go for.
