The next big thing: The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

Rumor is already picking up speed around Apple’s next smartphones. A new report from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via AppleInsider) suggests Cupertino will pack even more power into the iPhone 7 Plus.

Every new iPhone is at least a little more powerful, because it is the best iPhone yet. However, when it comes to RAM that’s not always the case. It took years for Apple to jump from 1GB of memory to the 2GB found in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Apple plans to push that number to 3GB next year with the iPhone 7 Plus, though not for the smaller iPhone 7. It is pretty weird to me as I always thought that they weren't always about the specs, I mean my iPad Air 2 still works really well because of great apps optimization. Perhaps it is how intensive applications nowadays are really forcing Apple to up their game with higher RAM.

It is also possible that the larger model could introduce a new feature not available on its smaller sibling. Apple still only offers optical image stabilization on its plus-sized smartphones, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for the iPhone 7 Plus to offer a few extra perks as well. That might be enough to validate an extra gigabyte of RAM. It would be really nice to see optical image stabilization on the iPhone 7 and not just their upsized versions. A smaller phone still feels much easier to use. I will use my iPad when I need it to be huge.

Kuo’s latest note also goes over a few other details, though we’ve already heard most of them. He makes the pretty obvious prediction that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will launch in September 2016 with a new A10 processor. The analyst previously predicted the iPhone 7 could shave almost a millimeter of thickness from its design, making it the company’s slimmest smartphone yet.

Within a month of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus release, there are multiple uploaded videos on YouTube featuring bend tests and waterproof tests. With its 7000 Series aluminum design, bendgate has been defeated. The waterproof tests were a pleasant surprise. Water and dust-resistant, this is one feature I would really see to love come true. If Apple is going to do it, you can trust that they are going to do it properly and do it well.

The camera, speakers, home button, power button, Touch ID fingerprint sensor and 3D Touch still worked fine after the waterproof test. Apple does not promote the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus as being waterproof, but it seems like the Cupertino giant is heading in that direction.

Mac Otakara, a Japanese Apple news blog that is known for successfully predicting several iPhone rumors, recently wrote its sources are claiming the “iPhone 7” should be waterproof and dust-proof.

To find out how the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus devices were waterproof, iFixit took a look at the glue that is used in the devices. It turned out that the glue appears to act as a gasket around the inside edge of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. The strip of glue that is used in the new iPhones accounts for about a 0.3mm increase in the width of the devices compared to its predecessors. “If that strip of sticky goop on the 6s wasn’t put there to hold the display in, then maybe—just maybe—it was designed to keep liquids out. Like a gasket!” said iFixit.
